Could It Be My Thyroid

Thyroid Newsmakers

George H. W. Bush

George H.W. BushWhen the forty-first President of the United States developed a heart rhythm disturbance while jogging, it stunned America. Tests revealed that the President was suffering from atrial fibrillation caused by Graves' disease. Against improbable odds of more than 10,000 to one, both President and Mrs. Bush had developed Graves' disease within two years of each other. President Bush was treated with drugs to control his heart rhythm, blood thinners to prevent blood clots, and radioactive iodine to control his hyperthyroidism. He is now euthyroid on levothyroxine and continues to lead a very active and productive life.

"Take it from someone whose thyroid gland has been the subject of national media scrutiny: having my problem diagnosed and treated has helped me to continue to lead a full and productive life. To anyone who may be facing a similar situation, I highly recommend that you take action and consult a doctor. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones."
